Bali is many things — a spiritual destination, a surf paradise, a backpacker hub — but for digital nomads, it’s also one of the most mature remote-work ecosystems in the world. Canggu alone has more nomad-friendly cafés per square kilometre than almost anywhere on earth, and the infrastructure for remote workers has been building for a decade.

The trade-off is real: Bali is not the cheapest destination on this list (cost of living in Canggu runs higher than Chiang Mai or Medellín), and the WiFi at budget guesthouses can be unreliable. But for the combination of community, lifestyle, culture, and tropical environment, it’s hard to beat.

Why Bali Works for Remote Work

WiFi: Average speeds of 25–40 Mbps in coworking spaces and mid-range hotels. Budget guesthouses are inconsistent — plan to work from a nearby café or coworking space rather than relying on hotel WiFi at the budget end. Most nomads carry a Telkomsel SIM for tethering as backup.

Cost: Canggu runs $1,200–2,000/month for a comfortable lifestyle. Ubud is 15–20% cheaper. Both are significantly more affordable than any comparable lifestyle in Europe or North America.

Nomad Score: 8.5/10

Best Areas to Stay

Canggu is the nomad capital of Bali — dense with cafés, coworking spaces, surf breaks, and an international community of remote workers. Berawa and Pererenan (just north of the Canggu core) offer slightly better value while remaining within easy scooter range of everything.

Ubud sits in the hills 45 minutes from Canggu and runs 3–4°C cooler — which matters when you’re working through a tropical afternoon. The nomad scene is smaller but genuine. Great for focused work, longer stays, and those who want a quieter environment.

Seminyak is Bali’s upscale beach strip — stylish hotels, good restaurants, but limited coworking infrastructure. Fine for shorter visits but not the best long-term nomad base.

Avoid Kuta — it’s Bali’s party district and a poor environment for remote work.

Hotel Prices

Budget Price/night Best for
Budget $15–25 Guesthouses with pool, Canggu/Ubud
Mid-range $40–70 Boutique villas, pool, breakfast
Comfort $90–180 Private pool villas, fast WiFi

Bali’s mid-range accommodation is exceptional value — $40–60/night gets you a beautiful boutique property with a pool, AC, and breakfast. At this price point in Canggu or Ubud the quality genuinely surprises most first-time visitors.

Practical Info

Visa: 30-day visa on arrival (~$35 USD), extendable to 60 days at any immigration office. B211A social visa for longer stays.

SIM card: Telkomsel or XL Axiata — buy at the airport or convenience stores. ~100,000 IDR ($6) for 30 days unlimited data.

Getting around: Scooter rental 60,000–80,000 IDR/day — essential in Bali, walking is impractical. Grab and Gojek work well as ride-hailing alternatives.

Best months: May–September (dry season). November–March is wet season — still workable but expect afternoon rain daily.

Coworking: Dojo Canggu (~$10/day), Outpost Ubud (~$12/day), Tribal Bali (~$8/day). Most cafés in Canggu are unofficially nomad-friendly.
